Canadian governments are no strangers to hypocrisy, but when it comes to housing they really outdo themselves. All three levels of government express concern about housing affordability, but they drive up the price of new homes and condos with a long list of fees and taxes.
Those charges restrict people’s ability to buy the new houses and condos, which limits the flow of housing supply, which helps keep housing prices high. It’s the exact opposite of what government should be doing.
